Voices of GIST: A storytelling project
A current GIST student in dialogue with a former GIST teacher.
As part of the 25th anniversary celebrations at GIST, our grades 7 to 11 successfully completed a meaningful project designed to honor the diverse voices and experiences that have made up our school community over the years. The project began with the goal of capturing past and present personal stories, reflections, memories and insights of those community members who have shaped and been shaped by GIST over the years. Students took on the responsibility of identifying and reaching out to a wide range of interviewees, including alumni, long-time staff members, past families and current business partners, initiating conversations that offered a rich tapestry of perspectives.
Through these interviews, students engaged deeply with their subjects, asking thoughtful questions and listening closely to the narratives that emerged. The process was more than just an academic task – it was a genuine exploration of what it means to be part of the GIST community. From memories of the school’s early days to reflections on its growth and evolution, the stories collected revealed a strong sense of connection, resilience, and pride as the school grows into its 25th year.
In the final stage of the project, we worked collaboratively to refine each written piece, ensuring that the voices of our interviewees came through clearly and respectfully. Students revised their work with care, shaping their texts not only to inform but to reflect the emotional weight and personal meaning behind each interview. The result is a collection that celebrates 25 years of GIST with warmth, honesty, and a deep appreciation for the people who have made the school what it is today.
