Volunteer with us
Our school is full of eierlegende Wollmilchsäue - people who somehow do a bit of everything, and do it well. Even so, some tasks grow beyond what our team can carry, and hiring someone new isn't always the answer.
That's where you come in.
Volunteering with us keeps our running costs low and our energy where it belongs: with the students. And in most cases, we're asking for something you already do anyway - something you're good at, that costs you little effort, and that would cost our administration hours.
If that sounds like you, have a look at the roles below.
“Volunteering at the weekly school lunch for just two hours a week has become one of my highlights of the week. What started as a simple way to give back has turned into something I really look forward to.
There’s such a great energy during lunchtime and seeing the kids chatting, laughing and just being themselves is so much fun. What I love most is how quickly you start to build little connections. The kids remember you, wave to you, and sometimes even ask if you’ll be there again next week. It’s such a simple commitment, yet it makes a real difference.
If you're thinking about volunteering, I can’t recommend it enough. It’s fun, it’s rewarding, and it’s a really great way to meet new parents, interact with both the kids and teachers and feel more connected to the school community. Two hours a week has never felt so worthwhile.” - Richard Meakin
Volunteer Roles
-
Currently filled - please still reach out for future needs!
A monitor that won't connect. A printer setting gone rogue. A projector that refuses to cooperate. For someone without experience, these small problems eat up a lot of time. For you, they're a five-minute fix. You help us out with everyday IT hiccups as they come up.
You bring: confidence with tech
Time: about one hour per month, often less
VSC: required
Contact: Thomas at thomas.pfanner@gistonline.ca -
Sometimes things need to be moved, and nobody in the administration has a car. As a driver, you let us know you're available to help transport things, usually together with someone from our team.
You bring: a car and a bit of flexibility
Time: roughly 1–2 trips per month
VSC: not required
Contact: Thomas at thomas.pfanner@gistonline.ca -
You're already out in the community - at the library, the community centre, the sports club. You take our posters along, put them up, and keep track of where they're hanging. Just as valuable: you're happy to strike up a conversation and tell people about our school.
You bring: an outgoing nature and local connections
Time: 3–4 hours per month
VSC: not required
Contact: Thomas at thomas.pfanner@gistonline.ca -
You help our lunch program run smoothly: setting up the pop-up cafeteria alongside other parents and staff, serving food to students, and making sure allergy restrictions are respected.
You bring: reliability and a friendly presence
Time: 2 hours per shift. A few shifts a year is absolutely fine, one to two shifts a month is ideal, and weekly is very welcome if you'd like a fixed spot on the team.
VSC: required

You join our fundraising team and help spread the word. The focus is on people: finding individual donors in our immediate and wider community, telling them about current campaigns, and showing them how they can take part.
You bring: enthusiasm for our school and an ease in talking to people
Time: 1–2 hours per week
VSC: not required

Remarks
VSC: Most roles require a valid VSC. Where it isn't needed, we say so in the role description.
Not part of the GIST community yet? We'll invite you for a short conversation first, so we can both see whether it's a good fit.
Not sure which role suits you? Get in touch anyway — we'll figure it out together.
